The Airline Deregulation Act was intended to produce better service and lower fares because of increased competition. Existing airlines could fly wherever they wanted and could set their own fares; new airlines could enter the marketplace. The outcome was rather different than what had been envisioned. This book analyzes airlines that began pure-jet passenger service between 1990 and 2000 which by 2005 had failed, merged with another carrier or were sold.
